THE HOLTKAMP ORGAN AND ITS BUILDER
The Holtkamp Organ Company is the oldest pipe organ company currently active in the United States, having begun as G. F. Votteler and Company in 1855 and operating continuously since that time. Henry Holtkamp joined Votteler in 1903, followed by his son, Walter. Walter Holtkamp, Jr. became President of the company at the death of his father in 1962. In 1987, F. Christian Holtkamp joined the firm as the fourth generation of Holtkamps to be active in this small Cleveland, Ohio company dedicated to the art of organ building.
Each Holtkamp Organ is a unique instrument, designed specifically for the visual and acoustical environment in which it is housed and played. Throughout its history the firm has been noted for integrity, creativity and vision.
The creation of the St. Joseph Church organ is the result of the re-use of some of the venerable pipes of the former Estey Organ as well as the use of some refinished cabinetry from that organ. Along with the use of the newest audio, electrical and organ building technology, and new ranks of pipes from Germany, the present organ is truly a world class organ. It combines and blends the best of the old and the new.
MUSIC AT ST. JOSEPH PARISH
The music program at St. Joseph Church is fully integrated into the worship life of the parish. All aspects of the music ministry seek to glorify God through song, lift up the song of God’s people, and bring a glimpse of the divine to the faithful.
The most important choir of St. Joseph is the entire assembly that gathers to celebrate Mass. Led by the clergy, as well as other ministers and musicians, this great choir of the faithful sings forth the great hymns and acclamations of the church. Many theologians consider the pinnacle of the Mass to be the Sanctus: "…and so with all the choirs of angels we join in the unending hymn – Holy, holy, holy."
The St. Joseph’s Choir is a group of volunteer and professional singers. In addition to providing leadership to the choir of the assembly, the ensemble sings the great repertoire of the church, spanning from medieval chant to new works. All are welcome to join, and an audition is not necessary. This choir regularly sings for the Sunday 9:00 Mass. The St. Joseph’s Choir rehearses each Thursday from 7:00-9:00 in the Parish Center.
The St. Joseph’s Youth Choir sings for the Masses on the first and third Sundays of each month at 11:00. The Youth Choir is directed by Mary Burke. The choir is open to all singers in grades 4-8. Singers have the choice of rehearsing either Monday or Thursday afternoons from 3:30-4:30. For more information, please contact Mary Burke at the parish center.
